What’s up this Week (April 15-19)

In the past week or so we have had a student walkout, two feeder school visits, a snow day, play and band performances, an invention convention, sport tournaments and I was away for two days. To say we fell out of routine a little is an understatement!

Grade 7 Math

Last week, we reviewed some concepts from grade 6 including congruence and transformations. Students created tiling patterns (tessellations) in the form of artwork. This “Escher Art” is due on Monday (for students looking for the tutorials from class, they can find them HERE). This coming week, we will be starting to discuss similar shapes and will relate this concept to past number sense topics of percent and proportions. There will be a short assessment on Wednesday, which will involve both congruent and similarity.

Grade 7 Science

We have been studying solubility and factors affecting the rate of dissolving. Student lab groups designed their own experiments to test the impact of one independent variable on the rate of dissolving. Variables include: temperature, amount of solute, amount of solvnet, concentration of solvent, size of solute (sugar cube), stirring speed and container size. On Tuesday, we will be using analysing our results and the lab report will be due on Wednesday. Also, next week, we will be discussing methods to separate mechanical mixtures (include sorting, floating/settling, sifting, filtering, and magnetism).
